Dice Soho is a Houston-bred MC whose career predates Don's by several years; teaming with him for a single in mid-2018 was a deliberate hometown signal — Don as a Houston artist with Houston peers, not a Houston export looking for crossover. The track surfaced as both a standalone single and as one of the four canonical singles connected to *Donny Womack*. Sonically, 'Holdin' Steel' leans harder than 'Diva' or the album's croonier moments. The drum programming is more aggressive, the low-end pummels rather than rolls, and Don's vocal sits in a slightly lower register than the falsetto-heavy mode he would commit to on *Heaven or Hell*. The title functions as both literal and metaphorical: the paraphrase covers self-protection, readiness, and a posture of defensive composure inside an environment Don's verses describe as constantly testing his patience.
