Era Timeline

The Evolution

A decade of reinvention. Multiple eras. A growing catalog.Follow the line from Heaven or Hell to Hardstone Psycho.

2017–2019

The Swishahouse Heir

Don's pre-Cactus Jack and earliest CJ days — *Playa Familia* (2017 with Yungjosh93) and *Donny Womack* (2018) frame him in vintage-soul sepia, channeling his Swishahouse-affiliated father's record collection. The sound is 70–95 BPM half-time trap, woozy melodic-rap (Pitchfork's "psychedelic rap"), warm slowed Houston low-end, chopped vocal ad-libs, and warbled auto-tune in the Travis/Future lineage. "Can't Say" on *Astroworld* (Aug 2018) identified him as the year's breakout; "No Idea" became a sleeper TikTok smash through 2019–2020.

Donny Womack

4 tracks

Don Toliver's major-label debut mixtape, released August 2 2018 — one day before Travis Scott's *Astroworld* and four days before Don's official Cactus Jack signing announcement. The title pays homage to soul legend Bobby Womack and frames Don in sepia-toned vintage-soul imagery. Wikipedia preserves the documented singles ("Diva," "Make Sumn," "Holdin' Steel" feat. Dice Soho, "Diamonds") but the full tracklist is not preserved publicly — flagged for verification.

Notable

2019–2020

The Cactus Jack Coronation

Bridged by the *JackBoys* compilation (Dec 2019) and crowned by *Heaven or Hell* (March 2020), this era is built on Mike Dean synth pads, gospel-tinged organs, distorted 808s, and Travis-Scott-style ad-lib choirs. Visuals deploy religious dichotomy — angel/demon, halo/horn, gold/black, stained-glass iconography. Themes of salvation versus damnation, fame anxiety, paranoia, women, money, and the quick rise. *Heaven or Hell* peaked at #7 with "After Party" and "No Idea" each going 3× Platinum.

7 tracks

The first Cactus Jack compilation, released December 27 2019, with Don as a core member alongside Travis Scott, Sheck Wes, and the late Pop Smoke. The seven-track set debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 — the first #1 album of the 2020s — moving 154K units in week one. Don's contributions ("HAD ENOUGH," "WHAT TO DO?," uncredited vocals on "GANG GANG") cemented his place inside the CJ inner circle and previewed the sonic palette of *Heaven or Hell* three months later.

Heaven or Hell

12 tracks

Don's debut studio LP, released March 13 2020 on Cactus Jack / Atlantic / We Run It. Built around WondaGurl and Mike Dean's gospel-tinged synth pads, distorted 808s, and Travis-style ad-lib choirs, the album peaked at #7 on the Billboard 200 and went Platinum in February 2023. "After Party" (3× Platinum) and "No Idea" (3× Platinum) became sleeper TikTok smashes that defined his crossover. Pitchfork rated it 6.1 — praised as a fully-formed melodic-trap statement, criticized for thin lyrical content. A *Chopnotslop Remix* released April 2020 as direct homage to Houston's chopped-and-screwed tradition.

2021–2022

The Pop-Star Apex

*Life of a Don* (Oct 2021) plus a year of high-profile guest spots: Kanye "Moon" (*Donda*, Aug 2021) with Kid Cudi, "Broken Road" (*Donda 2*, Feb 2022), Pusha T "Scrape It Off" (Apr 2022), Justin Bieber "Honest" (Apr 2022), DJ Khaled "Lets Pray" (Aug 2022), Metro Boomin's *Heroes & Villains* trio (Dec 2022). Sonics expand to 80–145 BPM, Skrillex-tinged maximalism on "Don't Go," higher production polish, layered vocal stacks, ambient outros, cinematic synth swells. Visuals: lone-cowboy outlaw motifs, dust, leather, sepia. Peaked **#2** on Billboard 200; Pitchfork 7.2.

Don's pop-star apex, released October 8 2021 — sixteen tracks of cinematic synth swells, brightened mixes, and lone-cowboy iconography. Peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 (68K units week one), Pitchfork 7.2, Metacritic 73. "Drugs n Hella Melodies" with Kali Uchis was the first public collab with his then-girlfriend; "Swangin' on Westheimer" pays direct tribute to Houston's candy-paint Swangas. The Travis Scott-assisted "Flocky Flocky" and "You" anchor the project's CJ continuity. Supported by the *Life of a Don Tour* with BIA opening.

2023

The Romantic Concept Record

*Love Sick* (Feb 2023) reframes Don as full-bore R&B singer — 90–125 BPM, lusher live-band textures, Pharrell-adjacent neptunes-y bounce, and the Toto-"Africa"-interpolating "Private Landing." Visuals soften to pinks, peaches, rose-gold, lingerie aesthetic, bedroom/boudoir lighting, Renaissance allusions. Themes: love, devotion, jealousy, sexual yearning, codependence — Kali Uchis as the lyrical centerpiece. Don guests on Kali's "Fantasy" (*Red Moon in Venus*) the following week. Toured as *Love Sick Tour* after supporting Future's *One Big Party Tour*.

Don's romantic concept record, released February 24 2023 (deluxe February 28). The most-sung album of his career: lusher R&B textures, live-band feel, James Blake collaborations, and the Toto-"Africa"-interpolating "Private Landing" with Justin Bieber and Future. Soft pinks, peaches, and rose-gold visuals replaced the murk of *Heaven or Hell*; the record positioned Kali Uchis as the album's lyrical centerpiece. Peaked at #8 on Billboard 200 (40.5K units week one), RIAA Gold March 2025, Metacritic 68. Toured as *Love Sick Tour* after supporting Future's *One Big Party Tour*.

2024–2025

The Trap Reset

*Hardstone Psycho* (June 2024) and *JackBoys 2* (July 2025) — the most aggressive era of his career. 130–160 BPM rage-trap energy (Yeat is a touchstone), distorted 808s pushed into clipping, metal-adjacent guitar samples, sirens, shouted/processed vocals. "Hardstone" as self-coined microgenre: hardstyle-meets-trap. Visuals: black/red/chrome, biker iconography, gothic-industrial, getaway-driver imagery. Themes: paranoia, fame's corrosion, masculine bravado, vehicular/heist imagery, drug-addled intensity, existential dread. Peaked **#3** Billboard 200, **#1** R&B/Hip-Hop. *Psycho Tour* + supporting Travis's *Circus Maximus*.

Hardstone Psycho

20 tracks

The trap-reset, released June 14 2024. Organized into five "Volumes" (Thunder Road · Dead Man's Canyon · Twin Peaks · Promise Land · Stonehenge deluxe), the album coined "hardstone" as a self-styled microgenre — hardstyle-meets-trap, distorted 808s pushed into clipping, metal-adjacent guitar samples, sirens, and shouted/processed vocals. Charlie Wilson on "Attitude" and Cash Cobain's sexy-drill bounce provided counterweight; Yeat, Lil Uzi Vert, FKA Twigs, Travis Scott, and Future feature. Peaked at **#3** Billboard 200 (76.5K units), **#1** R&B/Hip-Hop, RIAA Gold. "Bandit" went Platinum. Toured as *Psycho Tour* (2024–2025).

Don leads or co-leads on "Champain & Vacay," "2000 Excursion" (with Travis & Sheck), "Velour" (with Sheck Wes), "No Comments," and "Cant Stop" (with Future + Wallie the Sensei). Only Don's lead/co-lead tracks are catalogued here; the full 17–20-track compilation is documented elsewhere. (verify) Producer credits per-track pending second-source confirmation.

2026–

The #1 Album Era

*Octane* (Jan 30 2026) — Don's **first #1 album** and a hybrid synthesis of every prior era: melodic pop hooks (HoH), trap aggression (HSP), R&B intimacy (Love Sick), Houston low-end (Donny Womack). 75–155 BPM, the cleanest, most expensive-sounding mix of his catalog, Mike Dean orchestral-trap textures. Automotive visuals — speed, gasoline, chrome, tail lights, oil slicks, oranges and electric blues, motion-blur cinematography. Themes: velocity, fatherhood (post-2024 birth), the long view of fame, sustained love. 162K first-week units, 138.98M streams, AMA 2026 noms for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist + Best Hip-Hop Album. *Octane Tour* + supporting Post Malone's *Big Ass Stadium Tour*.
