2017–2019
Don's pre-Cactus Jack and earliest CJ days — *Playa Familia* (2017 with Yungjosh93) and *Donny Womack* (2018) frame him in vintage-soul sepia, channeling his Swishahouse-affiliated father's record collection. The sound is 70–95 BPM half-time trap, woozy melodic-rap (Pitchfork's "psychedelic rap"), warm slowed Houston low-end, chopped vocal ad-libs, and warbled auto-tune in the Travis/Future lineage. "Can't Say" on *Astroworld* (Aug 2018) identified him as the year's breakout; "No Idea" became a sleeper TikTok smash through 2019–2020.
Don Toliver's major-label debut mixtape, released August 2 2018 — one day before Travis Scott's *Astroworld* and four days before Don's official Cactus Jack signing announcement. The title pays homage to soul legend Bobby Womack and frames Don in sepia-toned vintage-soul imagery. Wikipedia preserves the documented singles ("Diva," "Make Sumn," "Holdin' Steel" feat. Dice Soho, "Diamonds") but the full tracklist is not preserved publicly — flagged for verification.

Bridged by the *JackBoys* compilation (Dec 2019) and crowned by *Heaven or Hell* (March 2020), this era is built on Mike Dean synth pads, gospel-tinged organs, distorted 808s, and Travis-Scott-style ad-lib choirs. Visuals deploy religious dichotomy — angel/demon, halo/horn, gold/black, stained-glass iconography. Themes of salvation versus damnation, fame anxiety, paranoia, women, money, and the quick rise. *Heaven or Hell* peaked at #7 with "After Party" and "No Idea" each going 3× Platinum.
The first Cactus Jack compilation, released December 27 2019, with Don as a core member alongside Travis Scott, Sheck Wes, and the late Pop Smoke. The seven-track set debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 — the first #1 album of the 2020s — moving 154K units in week one. *Love Sick* (Feb 2023) reframes Don as full-bore R&B singer — 90–125 BPM, lusher live-band textures, Pharrell-adjacent neptunes-y bounce, and the Toto-"Africa"-interpolating "Private Landing." Visuals soften to pinks, peaches, rose-gold, lingerie aesthetic, bedroom/boudoir lighting, Renaissance allusions. Organized into five "Volumes" (Thunder Road · Dead Man's Canyon · Twin Peaks · Promise Land · Stonehenge deluxe), the album coined "hardstone" as a self-styled microgenre — hardstyle-meets-trap, distorted 808s pushed into clipping, metal-adjacent guitar samples, sirens, and shouted/processed vocals. Charlie Wilson on "Attitude" and Cash Cobain's sexy-drill bounce provided counterweight; Yeat, Lil Uzi Vert, FKA Twigs, Travis Scott, and Future feature.
